How to Grow Zucchini at Home

  • Plant Zucchini seeds directly in the place where they will grow to maturity.
  • Seeds are planted as early as possible in Spring.
  • Zucchini don't like their leaves wet, except by rain. Always water them at ground level, taking care not to wet the leaves.
  • They are known to grow like squash, pumpkin and gourds. They have long stalks and huge green leaves.
  • They produce a yellow flower which turns into the vegetable.
  • Though Zucchini and pumpkin both part of the same family, Zucchini grows without a tangle of runners that spread like wildfire.
  • The plants grow in a contained area, much smaller area than other pumpkin family members.
  • The Zucchini flowers can be eaten either fresh in salad, stuffed or used in soups and sautés
  • Zucchini has small fleshy cucumber like fruits.
  • After the zucchini start to flower, the fruits will appear within a few days.
  • Check them regularly so you can harvest them when they are 8 -10cm (3-4") long.
  • Let the name "baby" not fool you, each Zucchini can grow to 35-50cm (14-20") long if you don't watch them. You can then call them Giant Baby Marrows. If you go away for a few days, ask a friend to pick them for you, otherwise you will have loads of giant baby marrows when you get back. The giant ones are usable to a point. When they grow up too long they become fibrous and inedible
